Opening Night
I can hardly believe it, but tonight is opening night for Les Troyens. It has come all of a sudden it seems. Because of Pesach and being sick earlier this month, I have missed more rehearsals than I have for any other performance, but happily I found I was able to get through the run-through last night with little difficulty.
This music is so catching you can't help but hum it. The words caused me trouble, but I sat in a library in Chicago for an hour silently mouthing the french until it became muscle memory in my lips if not my vocal chords. It's a marvellous piece, full of sweeping music, and I find I'm able to get past the mechanics and start to weep for Andromache and rejoice in the proud madness of the last Act.
I still want more sleep, relief from my lingering cough, and a few more times listening to the recitatives, but on the whole I am actually ready. The time has come to sing!
