Resolutions 2009
Another year has turned and it is time for resolutions again. I didn't make much progress on last years, although I did cook a great deal more due to my newfound poverty and I did make it into med school (which was not a listed resolution). So it's time to renew a few oldies but goodies and add a few new ones as well.
1) Find my focus. The curriculum I've been going through is easy to understand but difficult to master. There's nothing conceptually difficult, but I need to get to the point where I live and breathe it, and I haven't yet found how to achieve that. That is my task this year, so that in a year's time I am nearly ready for the boards.
2) Exercise. I'd like to lose 10 lbs to get back to my "fighting weight", but more than that, I'd like to get back to triathloning. I enjoyed it in Boston, and if it weren't for so many changes (moving, school, etc) I would still be doing it today. I may not get to Olympic distance, but let's put my goal at two sprint distance races this year.
3) Gratitude. I'm generally good at hosting -- I've had a lot of practice and I flit and arrange like the Dickens -- but I'm generally bad at guesting and general gratitude. My new plan is to not just think about but actually write thank you notes, bring wine to a dinner, give small gifts of thanks to my catsitters, etc. It is a practice I should have begun ages ago, but there's no time like the present to begin.
4) Deepen friendships. This is a joy to accomplish but a chore to work on and I really must keep up the effort. It does take time, but I'd like to have a good set of Cleveland friends for good times and bad by the end of the year.
5) Reclaim variety. I searched for a better word -- music? too specific, art? passions? too misleading. What I currently miss is diversity among friends, among habits, among the things of my daily life. I need to reclaim that, though the means may be through music, dance, poetry readings, or any number of other things.
That is enough for now. It's an ongoing struggle, but a good one.
Good luck to all in the coming year. Health, happiness, and love!
