En route

OK, Montrealers and Worldconners: I have booked trains that will take me to Montreal on 5 Aug and back on 9 Aug, which means I'll overlap with most of the convention. Conveniently I also have a place to stay, very near Sherbrooke station. If there's some reason this is a bad idea, speak now, as I can only cancel for the next 24 hours...

I am not really a con person but what the hell, it ain't exactly gonna be coming to my sort-of-adopted-hometown every year.

Presumably at some point I'll have to buy Worldcon admission as well. Er. Pardon my profound ignorance. Do I have to do that in advance, or can I do that at the door, or is there a secret handshake, or what?
I can't say that I grew up on sea faring books, but there were several key ones that were read to me in Russian before I turned 6, specifically "Robinson Crusoe" and "Gulliver's travels."  The exotic nature of the books and the talent of the writers (and translators, I might add) created both an impression and an linguistic imprint of nautical terminology (rigging, cabin boy, sloop, mast, pump, deck, prow, you get the picture).

When I started reading English, the difference in my relationships with English and Russian was, for some reason, particularly palpable; the original English terms were pointedly lacking in smell and taste, as compared with the salty, weather beaten, briny, creaky, authentic sound of the Russian translations.   But now it might be finally over - I am on my second "Aubrey and Maturin" book, and thank you very much, Mr. O'Brian for making the sea real for me in English.  So, 1.5 down, 18.5 books to go - I think my book on CD choices for the next year or so have been taken care of...

Online bake sale!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
From [info]roozle:

[info]redheadedmuse and I were brainstorming about how to help a beloved friend who is feeling the pinch financially more than most. Short of a fabulous job, the most helpful thing we thought we could give her was some cash.

So we'd like to help her out in a small way by hosting an on-line bake sale. If you're interested in baking something for this project, fill out the form we've created at
http://bit.ly/TquHf. Next week, we'll post up all the entries on the lj site we created, pastrypleasures.livejournal.com, and auction off the items through the blog. All the items will need to be available to be picked up at 110 Boston Ave. on or before Friday, July 24 at noon.

We're already going to have some delicious stuff by talented bakers, but more would be helpful. Fill out the online form by Friday, July 17 if you want to contribute. Even if you don't bake, you can help: spread the word and help us find people who want to bid on and eat tasty baked goods. Post here or email [[info]roozle] privately if you have questions.

Do we get to call the pope limp-wristed, now?

schadenfreude

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So perhaps you're already being entertained by F my Life.
But now, for those who enjoy snickering at others' bad days and little faux pas, there's also Texts from Last Night, with the motto "Remember that text you shouldn't have sent last night? We do."

It's hit or miss, but there's some gems in there.
It's like a lowbrow, more updated PostSecret. In other words, a bit like a train wreck.

ETA: As pointed out, there's also Why the F**k do you have a kid? and STFU, Parents...yeah, I can identify with a bit too much of the latter, what with family on Facebook.
Soon, any band will be able to turn their songs into playable tracks and sell them through Rock Band.

moods are weird
bad moods sometimes dissolve with the deliberate application of material things - food, entertainment, sensory experience, acquiring objects....

had to work harder than usual to make this happen but managed to get to a neutral mood and then a mildly satisfied mood by forcing myself through the routine of taking care of things that needed to be done and then doing some things just for fun.

got my glasses fixed. they've been broken and giving me bad headaches, catching in my hair, and falling off during yoga for months now. waiting to take them back where i bought them was a silly mistake. just walked into lenscrafters and they fixed them for free and gave me a spare soft case for my prescription sunglasses so they wont get scratched up floating around in my purse/car.

tried new makeup brand, had salesperson show me how to apply it. feared i might be allergic (as usual) but turns out i was just reacting to the animal hair brushes we used to apply it. wore makeup for ~4 hours with no irritation on my skin and minimal eye irritation. she showed me how to get the effect i wanted with eye makeup, which has often eluded me. being just barely legally blind without my glasses on contributes to difficulty applying eye makeup. she suggested a small magnifying mirror. she's smart. turns out brush shape also makes a difference. le sigh.

saw harry potter with family. mom said "are you wearing makeup?" i said "yes. try not to pass out." movie was less depressing than i expected it to be and still pretty good. as usual felt like a lot was left out, of necessity, but it worked and i will see it again.

had a hot dog, popcorn, and a piece of coffee cake for dinner. need to do better tonight.

going through checklists of stuff to do. making lists. making lists is a sign that my brain has gone fuzzy, but the lists get me through.

totally forgot about bread starter for the last 2 days. need to attempt to bake it tonight. might come out okay, just more sour than it would have. or it will be gross and we'll toss it.

must remind self to eat lunch.

LJ Contact Question

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
If, on someone's profile, under "Contact" it says "Private Message", does that mean that if I send email to username@livejournal.com it will work?
May your next year be an awesome one!

This is another one of those "I swear it is for work really" questions.  Have any of you ever seen the 1980 porn movie "Taboo" or its 1985 sequel "Taboo American Style?"  If so, do you recall the apparent age/level of school of the teenage boy character?

Anonymous answers are fine.

theories of peace

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
seems to be in the news today.
I've been listening to We Choose the Moon, a website that is reliving the Apollo 11 mission 40 years (!) after launch.  They're replaying the audio tapes between Mission Control and the astronauts (and also twittering them), and the website has photos and other things on it.

At this point in the mission, Apollo 11 is part-way between the Earth and the Moon.  My favorite exchange thus far between the astronauts and the CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator, the person in Mission Control who speaks to the crew in space, and who is also an astronaut):

Apollo 11: Houston, 11.

CAPCOM: Go ahead,11.

Apollo 11: Join us in wishing Dr. George Mueller a happy birthday.

CAPCOM: Standing by for your birthday greetings.

Apollo 11: I think today is also the birthday of California and I believe they are 200 years old.  It’s Dr. Mueller’s birthday but I don’t think he is that old.

The website will be broadcasting in real time (with a 40 year delay) until the anniversary of the first moon landing.  At that time, you can go back and listen to any part at your leisure.

goblins!

d&d game still going well, but i wildly overestimated the effect of the first monster i threw at them this week (it rolled really poorly and they rolled really well; also the monk decided to fight defensively, which was apparently the right call). also carrion crawlers are slightly less badass in 3.5e, i think (their tentacles are only 2' long! shameful). i expected it to paralyze the entire party except the no-damaging-spells kobold sorceror, who's immune to paralysis ([info]baronet: "i am?" me: "i guess that wasn't the reason you took that feat, then..."), who'd then bravely fight it off one-on-one with, you know, a dagger or something (he's creative, and carrion crawlers don't do much damage if they can't paralyze you). instead it took out only one pc, and was finished off by the kobold rogue standing on the paralyzed pc's head. at least it was dramatic. :)

Good News Day

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
While my previous employer went down under the Madoff scheme, it would appear he did not stay down, and is definitely not out.

Highlights;
[Robert I. Lappin] paid out $5 million of his own money to restore the retirement savings of his employees who lost their nest eggs to admitted swindler Bernard L. Madoff. ...[He] made up for the lost savings of the 60 employees of his company, ...and of his private charity, ...

Lappin has also revived his charity, which supports Jewish education and culture programs on the North Shore. On Sunday, the foundation helped send 82 Jewish teens to Israel after raising $450,000 in private donations for the Youth to Israel travel program.

dunno if i have anything to say
want to vent.....but not finding words
possibly just a biochemical mood swing made worse by stress. trying not to interpret the passing clouds of emotion as solid reality with any basis.

can't psyche myself up to work from home the rest of the day because I'm afraid my lack of focus will be even more unfocusy if I go home. Can't seem to be at ease anywhere. basic anxiety wins. clearly need to meditate. or Something.

remembering cause and effect are more subtle than usually seems to be the case, I'm trying to appreciate the "nice" things without letting mood swings sour them. being in a funk doesn't mean time spent being social wasn't worth it, or wasn't working. feeling like a failure doesn't mean i am or that time spent being productive wasn't a good choice. not being rewarded for going through the necessary motions of my daily life doesn't mean anything is wrong.

moods are teh dumb.

some days it really seems i am blessed with the ability to appreciate everything. other days it's all grey mush. grey mush mood doesn't help with perspective or prioritizing. it is decidedly unhelpful as moods go.

normally i'd at least be excited to see a movie i'd been looking forward to but Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was such a depressing book that i can't picture seeing it with my family tonight cheering me up at all. my siblings usually manage to make me laugh but no guarantees this time.

would like this mood to go away now.
